The broad and large line of work of “Game Artists” includes much more jobs than we could imagine.

Typically, in small companies there will only be a few Game Artists who will have to handle many tasks, and be extremely versatile. But in bigger company with more employees the work will be distributed more evenly and each artist will have very specific roles, such as : Character Designers, Concept Artist, Project Manager, Animator, Narrative Designer... etc

But no matter the line of work chosen among the broad spectrum of the “Game Art jobs”, there will always be two major requirements to perform well in this field : Imagination and technique

Imagination and creativity

Probably the most dreamy aspect of this job, which is being able to fully express your creativity:

You’ll need a load of imagination and introduce innovative concepts, universes and graphics.

Technique and Constraints

To give shape to your imagination and creativity, you’ll have to master a lot of techniques.

How to coordinate colors, draw anatomy, textures, environments, perspective, 2D, 3D, traditional and digital drawings...

So you’ll have to imagine concepts, but also know how to produce those concepts.

Aside from the artistic aspect of this job, some skills in infographics are also required, so as not to interfere with the playability of the future game.

A teamwork spirit will also be needed, to respect constraints imposed by other colleagues, and keep a coherence within the whole game.

Finally, a Game Artist will have to keep aware of what’s surrounding them, what are the latest games out, who are the currently trending artists, and basically always keep up with the present, always aspire to do better, and different.

The world of Video Games is expending more and more thorough the years, and even if the artistic field is a though place to make your way in, a ton of different jobs and offers are available out there: Lead game artist, Concept and senior environment game artist, 3D Artist, 2D Artist, Character Designer, Narrative Designer, Artistic Director, Project manager, Animator, Environment Designer, Concept Artist... in bigger or smaller companies.
